Fabric Measure Automation
An automated system for precise fabric measurement and dispensing — the roll unwinds, measures the exact length, and stops ready for cutting. Controlled remotely, eliminating manual measuring errors and saving time.
Concept
A motorized fabric roll holder with an integrated length measurement system. The operator sets the desired length via a remote interface, the system unwinds the fabric to the exact dimension, and signals when it’s ready to cut.
Key Features
- Precise measurement — encoder or optical sensor for accurate length tracking
- Motorized dispensing — controlled unwinding with smooth start/stop
- Remote control — set length and start/stop from a tablet or phone
- Display — real-time length readout on the machine and remote device
- Presets — save commonly used lengths for quick recall
- Tension control — consistent fabric tension during unwinding
Planned Hardware
| Component | Candidates |
|---|---|
| Controller | ESP32 or STM32 |
| Motor | NEMA 23 stepper with driver |
| Encoder | Rotary encoder on dispensing roller |
| Display | OLED or small TFT on machine |
| Remote UI | Web interface via ESP32 Wi-Fi |
| Frame | Aluminum extrusion + 3D-printed brackets |
| Power | 24V PSU |
Open Questions
- Roller diameter compensation as the roll gets smaller
- Fabric slip detection and correction
- Maximum roll weight and motor torque requirements
- Blade integration or manual cutting only
